New training and conference centre opens at EMBL in Heidelberg

German Minister Annette Schavan has officially opened the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg.

The German Minister for Education and Research Annette Schavan has officially opened the European Molecular Biology Laboratory’s Advanced Training Centre in Heidelberg, saying the new centre, “Will form a central European platform where scientists from different countries, disciplines and generations can meet to exchange ideas and their best practices.”

Iain Mattaj, EMBL Director General said up to 6,000 course and conference participants are expected to gather at Advanced Training Centre annually, making it the prime hub for the international life sciences elite.

Money for the project came from the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF), which contributed €14 million, the Klaus Tschira Foundation, which gave €10 million, while the federal state of Baden-Württemberg contributed €1 million, and there were contributions from EMBL member states.
