The Department of Chemistry at the University of Eastern Finland in Joensuu has secured significant research funding from the EU for the development of high-resolution FT-ICR mass spectrometry. The European Network of Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry Centres involves ten different universities and research institutes and three industrial partners.
The University of Eastern Finland is the only Nordic university participating in the project. The overall budget of the project amounts to roughly 5 million euros, and the share of the University of Eastern Finland amounts to approximately 420,000 euros. The project received funding through the EU’s Horizon2020 programme.
The project's PI at the University of Eastern Finland is Professor Janne Jänis.
“The project significantly strengthens our position as one of the high-resolution mass spectrometry laboratories in Europe and enables long-term development of our activities,” Jänis says.
The project develops methodological expertise relating to the FT-ICR technology and offers related services in Europe.
The Department of Chemistry has secured significant funding relating to mass spectrometry infrastructures already before. In 2015, the Regional Council of North Karelia awarded the department more than 400,000 euros of ERDF funding for the acquisition of new FT-ICR equipment. Earlier, Biocenter Finland awarded nearly 1 million euros of funding to upgrade the equipment’s supraconductive magnet. In 2016, the department secured 434,000 euros of Academy of Finland funding for the acquisition of a high-resolution ion mobility mass spectrometer.
