University of Twente and Labmicta join forces to optimise laboratory processes

UT and medical microbiology laboratory Labmicta are joining forces to optimise laboratory processes with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotisation. In the coming years, they will collaborate on innovative solutions to enhance laboratory diagnostics, making them faster, more efficient, and more sustainable. This should improve patient care, as healthcare providers can make diagnoses even quicker and more accurately. Last week, the collaboration, which also stimulates the regional economy and innovative strength, was officially ratified during a signing ceremony. A PhD student will focus on research and implementation of AI and robotisation in laboratories, supervised by experts from both the UT and Labmicta.

Innovation in healthcare

The collaboration focuses on improving laboratory processes through data-driven optimisation and advanced capacity planning algorithms. “With this, we can improve the quality of care by, for example, reducing the turnaround time of diagnostic processes and better predicting when diagnostics will be available,” said Richard Boucherie of the Center for Healthcare Operations Improvement and Research (CHOIR). Remke Burie, Managing Director of UT's Technical Medical Centre, adds: “With this, we are developing an important collaboration with a new partner focused on healthcare innovation.” UT's expertise in operations research and AI contributes to a more future-proof laboratory workflow. “By combining our knowledge and research capacity with Labmicta's practical experience, we can develop new methods that make laboratory processes smarter and more efficient.”

Nashwan al Naiemi, Director of Labmicta adds: "Technological advances offer huge opportunities to transform laboratory processes. Together with the UT, we want to accelerate this innovation and develop applicable solutions. In this way, we not only improve the care process for the patient, but we also stimulate knowledge development in the Twente region. The collaboration with the University of Twente provides a scientific basis for making data-driven decisions, which is crucial for the future of laboratory management in an ever-changing healthcare environment."

This collaboration not only has an impact on the laboratory sector but also contributes to societal challenges, such as the increasing pressure on healthcare due to staff shortages, among other things. By integrating AI and robotisation, processes become more efficient, allowing healthcare providers to make faster and more accurate diagnoses. This contributes to better patient care. In addition, the collaboration strengthens the regional economy and boosts innovative capacity. The development and implementation of advanced AI solutions within the laboratory sector create new opportunities for regional companies and institutions, stimulate employment, and attract talent.
