TalTech researchers help develop CO2 capture technology for cement plants

TalTech, represented by researchers from the Department of Geology and Laboratory of Inorganic Materials of the Department of Material and Environmental Technology, is a partner in the EU-funded Research and Innovation project CLEANKER, which has developed new CO2 capture technology for cement plants. 

In October 2020, the CLEANKER project inaugurated a brand-new technology called calcium looping in hope to reduce the plants’ CO2 emissions by 90%. Success of the calcium looping technology will be key to retrofitting cement plants for CO2 capture, which itself is crucial for meeting EU emission targets over the short to medium term. Results of the CO2 carbonation, use, transport and storage studies conducted by TalTech researchers were recently presented at the CLEANKER CCUS online workshop “CCUS Scenarios for the Cement Industry”. Presentations are available on Cleanker webpage.
