An investment of €66 billion is needed across the full innovation pipeline to maintain global leadership, says the European aviation community

The heads of the EU’s two public-private partnerships for aviation research and innovation are urging the European Commission not to take the sector for granted when thinking about competitiveness and sustainability.
“The Commission’s focus at the moment seems to be to concentrate on industries which are in a dire state or about to enter a dire state,” said Axel Krein, executive director of the Clean Aviation joint undertaking. For instance, the Commission has recently published action plans for the steel and automotive industries.
Although Europe is a global leader when it comes to civil aircraft and air traffic management technologies, there is a concern that this position is threatened by heavy investment from the US and China. If it doesn’t take action, industry warns, Europe will lose its lead and have to rely on foreign technologies.
