ACES is the only pan-European award programme to recognise the risk-taking and talent of academic entrepreneurs. The ACES winners to date – 54 finalists and 18 winners – attest to Europe’s potential to produce highly innovative companies. Could it create more? The European Commission’s “Innovation Union” programme, launched in 2010 as one of the key pillars of Europe’s 2020 strategy, aims to tackle unfavourable framework conditions from patenting to venture capital. And the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, created in 2008 to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship, will roll out its own set of awards for entrepreneurs in 2012, in cooperation with Science|Business. This ACES yearbook celebrates the achievements of Europe’s academic entrepreneurs, and charts Europe’s progress in building a new culture of innovation on campus.
