The international R&D community’s response to the pandemic has been unprecedented in its scope, scale and speed of action. The development of multiple vaccines in under a year has demonstrated what is possible – and in parallel, scientists have earned a key role in shaping public discourse and understanding of the crisis. Horizon Europe has health as one of its central themes. With all the investment planned, the hopes of policymakers – and of the public – are sky high. But once the pandemic has receded, will Europe have the infrastructure it will need to carry research forward and meet those expectations?
