There are around 25 million SMEs in the EU...

They represent 99% of EU businesses and generating more than half the EU’s GDP. Often described as the “backbone” of the European economy, these companies now find themselves particularly hard hit by the COVID-19 crisis. Many might not survive a second recession.

At the same time, the EU is about to launch Horizon Europe, which is part of the huge recovery package to boost the economy while accelerating its green, digital and resilience agenda. SMEs are a focus. Will it be enough to help them?
