The newly-launched European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) aims to enable millions of researchers across Europe to use cloud computing to easily store, process, combine and analyse large amounts of digital data. To that end, the EOSC needs to be underpinned by advanced and accessible information and communications technologies (ICT). While Europe continues to invest in ICT to support scientific research, a successful EOSC would drive exponential growth in the computing and connectivity resources employed by Europe’s science. This paper explores what Europe needs to do to ensure it is prepared for a step change in the scientific demand for ICT.
