As the European Parliament calls on the EU to quadruple its investment in space to €60 billion in the next seven-year EU budget, we round up the current opportunities for space research funding.
The MEPs’ reasoning is simple: the EU needs to invest more to boost its competitiveness and autonomy in space.
“An EU without independent launch systems or without enough capacity to launch its space-based systems is a Europe that has no space access,” Finnish Green MEP Ville Niinistö told Science|Business last week. “And a Europe with no space access is economically weaker, vulnerable and lacks the tools to be strategically autonomous.”
