Universities look to EU funding to fill investment gaps

European University Association survey finds universities have high hopes of boosting tight budgets with EU funding in the near future – but is this sustainable?

As budgets stretch thin, the first place universities are looking to diversify and top up their incomes is EU funding, according to a new survey by the European University Association (EUA).

In the next five years, more than 60% of universities hope to increase the amount of funding they receive from the EU to fill gaps in their budgets.

“It’s a clear signal that should feed into the discussions going towards the next [EU budget],” says Enora Pruvot, deputy director for governance, funding and public policy development at the EUA. “There is a need to match these expectations and move towards the benchmark that the sector has highlighted of €200 billion for [the next EU research programme] FP10.”
