With the inauguration of the European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (ESMC), the EU is trying to gain momentum and build its semiconductor value chain. While this is likely to be a long and expensive process, research in semiconductors has been a part of the EU Framework programmes for many years. In the last three programmes, between 2007 – 2024, participants in projects associated with the semiconductor research topic have received around €2.7 billion for over 1,179 projects.

The biggest winner over this time was the Interuniversity Microelectronics Centre in Belgium, better known as IMEC. The research organisation has received €136 million for 95 projects, of which 20 were as coordinator.
