Defence has a new priority in EU policy, with the creation of a dedicated Defence and Space portfolio in the European Commission. The first person to hold that portfolio, former Lithuanian prime minister Andrius Kubilius, said during his confirmation hearing that he is committed to establishing a genuine European Defence Union. "We must achieve a true single market for defence," he said.
As for his role, Kubilius is set to collaborate closely with EU member states and maintain strong coordination with NATO, while enhancing EU defence capabilities through instruments such as the European Defence Fund (EDF), the EU’s main defence research programme.
