The digital landscape is undergoing a profound shift, and the EU’s Next Generation Internet (NGI) initiative is at the forefront of this evolution. The NGI Forum 2023, a flagship event by the European Commission, is designed to explore the key drivers shaping the future of the Internet. This hybrid event, scheduled for November 15-16 in Brussels, promises to be a dynamic convergence of innovators, policymakers, researchers, industry leaders, and users alike.

Empowering users, transforming the Internet

The NGI Forum 2023 serves as a dynamic hub for visionary thinkers, policymakers, and technologists to delve into the heart of Europe's digital transformation. At its core, the forum focuses on the concept of Digital Commons — a critical element for Europe, fostering equitable access to information, fueling innovation, and bolstering digital sovereignty.

Since 2019, the NGI initiative has been funding concrete projects, mostly open source, contributing to the human-centric transformative movement of the internet. This initiative stands as a cornerstone for digital commons at both national and international levels.

In an agenda spanning European policy developments, innovation trends, and NGI activities, the NGI Forum 2023 explores diverse topics. These include the potential of digital commons underpinning the transition to the future Internet, discussions on digital identity, quantum internet, large language models and web search, decentralised social media, and security of the open source supply chain.

Pioneering innovation through collaboration

Over the years, the NGI initiative has cultivated a remarkable ecosystem of talented, value-driven innovators, mostly working on open source projects. CryptPad, Searx, Mastodon, and many others are tangible outcomes of this movement, offering solutions for Internet users.
