Italian cleantech company Watly has launched a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGogo to raise money for an African pilot of its solar-powered machine for providing clean water, electricity and an internet connection.
The company developed the technology with funding from the EU’s Horizon 2020 research programme.
The machine decontaminates water using solar thermal energy, while photovoltaic panels produce electricity to power both the machine and external devices, such as mobiles phones or portable computers. In addition, it generates a wifi signal across a distance equivalent to five football fields.
Following a trial of the technology in Ghana, Watly requires cash to construct a scaled-up version of its machine. During its expected 15 years of service, one Watly will reduce as much as 1,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, equivalent to 2,500 barrels of oil, according to the company.
CEO and founder Marco Attistani, said, “By delivering internet connectivity, along with clean water and electricity, we give people the three pillars that are required for modern civilisation. In other terms, we are providing the Internet of Things where there is no internet, and very few things.”
