Aalto University Dean Risto Nieminen appointed to Academy of Finland Board

On Thursday, the Finnish Government appointed Aalto University Dean Risto Nieminen as a member of Board of the Academy of Finland.

On Thursday, the Finnish Government appointed Aalto University Dean Risto Nieminen as a member of Board of the Academy of Finland.

The board is chaired by Professor Heikki Ruskoaho from the University of Helsinki and the vice chair is Research Director Leena Suurpää from the Finnish Youth Research Society. The Board's term lasts until the end of 2018.

The other Academy Board members are Pertti Alasuutari from the University of Tampere, Chief Technology Officer Heidi Fagerholm from Kemira Oyj, Professor Riitta Keiski from the University of Oulu, and Professor Arto Mustajoki from the University of Helsinki.

Born in 1948, Academician Risto Nieminen, D.Sc. (Tech.), is the dean of the Aalto University School of Science

From 2000–2013, Nieminen ran the Centre of Excellence in Computational Nanoscience (COMP) at Aalto University, which was funded by the Academy of Finland.

The Centre of Excellence researches phenomena, structures and systems at the atomic and molecule level from the perspective of material physics. Nanoscience results are applied in areas such as electronics materials and chemical catalysis. Nieminen was an academy professor from 1997–2008 and he was awarded the honorary title of Academician of Science in February 2014.

"Science, research and innovations are vitally important to the future of Finland and its competitiveness. I'm very pleased and honoured to be working on behalf of these important issues as a member of the Board of the Academy of Finland", says Risto Nieminen.

The Board of the Academy of Finland determines the targets of the agency and its budget proposals. The board is also responsible for aligning the work of the Academy's research councils, Strategic Research Council and Finnish Research Infrastructure Committee and for promoting the fields of expertise of the research councils.
