Steelmaker Arcelor, carmaker Daimler-Benz and some 50 companies are joining an effort by the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS) to form an education and research network to scout new metallic materials for industrial use.

The Network of Complex Metallic Alloys, which received €7.3 million funding from the European Union, will be based in Nancy, France. It would offer education and research programmes on studying complex metal alloys which consist of more than one metallic element, such as stainless steel.

The network could discover new materials that could contribute to various fields such as telecom, energy and transport, according to a release. The network is staffed by 330 researchers from a dozen European countries.

As part of the network, the European School of Science of Materials will be established in Ljubljana, Slovenia for more educational programmes.
