New president for ETH Zürich

Physicist Ralph Eichler will be the new President of ETH Zürich following a decision by the Bundesrat, Switzerland’s executive authority, on 30 May.

Eichler, who has been Director of the ETH’s Paul Sherrer Institute since 2002, studied physics at the ETH in Zürich before moving to Stanford Univ ersity, US, as a postdoc. He returned to the ETH in 1982, becoming a professor in 1989.

Born in Guildford, England, he is a Swiss national. He says he is a team- and solutions-oriented person, and wants to ring this culture to the ETH. He takes up his position on 1 September 2007.
