Researchers at Mid Sweden University have developed a new tool for assessing the optical properties of paper and print. This will give paper manufacturers greater control over properties such as whiteness and colour, and enable users to precisely specify their requirements.

The current industry standard for assessing the optical properties of paper relies on a method developed in the 1930s, in which the light is measured as it is reflected from an illuminated paper surface. This has several shortcomings.

“We discovered that this is because the light is reflected in different amounts in different directions in an unexpected way. Our new model can explain and cope with this,” says researcher Per Edström.

The development work has involved collaboration with several paper manufacturers, and the software has been tested in an industrial setting.
