The UK’s Economic and Social Research Council is looking for proposals to set up the country’s first independent, multidisciplinary Centre for Charitable Giving and Philanthropy, to conduct academic research into why people are motivated to give.

The centre will have £2.2million over five years to support research aimed at influencing policy and practice decisions, as well as developing the evidence base to better understand charitable giving and philanthropy.

Ian Diamond, chief executive the research council, said the centre will allow it “to engage nationally and internationally in order to inform on and develop the charitable giving and philanthropic issues that really matter”. A key aim is to improve the government’s cooperation with the charitable sector.
