Queen’s University Belfast: ready to pay for top students

Queen’s University Belfast today (13 September) launched a scheme to encourage more students to study scientific and technical subjects, in face of a decades-long decline in the number of graduates in these fields in the UK.

The scheme, for students entering the University in 2008, offers awards of £1,000 to all students achieving three As at A-level who enrol on a Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics course at the university.

Queen’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Gregson said, “We are operating in a knowledge-led economy and it is crucial that we produce graduates with the right blend of know-how, expertise and innovation to ensure future economic prosperity. If we, and our colleagues throughout the university sector, do not act now to ensure a constant flow of such graduates, the economic outlook is bleak.”
