Licensing, Collaboration Opportunity

Heriot-Watt University is looking for collaboration, partnership and parties interested in purchasing a licence for their laser cavity technology developed by researchers at the university.

The patented laser cavity combines an intra-cavity mode selecting diffractive structure and a beam shaping component in order to produce high energy extraction and an arbitrary output intensity profile.

Currently in lasers where both output profile modification and beam shaping are required, it is necessary to use both intra-cavity mode selecting and beam shaping elements in series. This causes a loss in energy extraction from the laser. The present invention combines both of these elements into one device that performs mode selection within the cavity and beam shaping outside. This is of particular importance because by beam shaping within a cavity, even if only the natural Gaussian profile is desired as the output from the laser cavity, it is possible to extract more energy from the laser gain medium, generally by at least a factor of 3.

Benefits are:

  • Increased energy output from laser, generally by at least a factor of 3
  • Reduced physical size of laser cavities
  • Easier alignment

Stage of Development

  • Prototype stage: demonstration prototypes produced and tested.

Applications

  • These laser cavities can be used in a range of lasers where both output profile modification and beam shaping are required.

IP Status

  • GB patent application filed.

Commercial Opportunity

Heriot-Watt University is looking for parties interested in purchasing a license to this technology, collaboration or forming a joint venture partnership for the future development of the technology.
