The University of Dortmund is to change its name to Technische Universität Dortmund (TU Dortmund), to highlight its technical profile in research and teaching, and its technology transfer competences in engineering and natural sciences.

Announcing the change, the Rector Professor Dr Eberhard Becker said, “The TU Dortmund will become a distinctive trademark in the competition for research funds, excellent scientists and highly qualified students.”

The university says that with the renaming it takes another step towards distinguishing itself as a modern, innovative technical institution, with high-ranking research and technology- transfer competence. Around three-quarters of the university’s leading research departments are in engineering and natural sciences.
