GBP45M to support medical engineering projects

The Wellcome Trust and the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) have launched a joint GBP 45 million initiative in medical engineering and are open for funding applications.

The scheme is intended to multidisciplinary that bring together physical and engineering sciences with clinical and life sciences. The funding will enable academic institutions to engage in applied research for healthcare and improve the integration of expertise in the public and private sectors so that innovations are harnessed by the healthcare industry.

Mark Walport, Director of the Wellcome Trust said, “This scheme will provide major new funding for interdisciplinary collaborations to develop new technologies that will advance healthcare in the future.”

Applications for funding from academic institutions across the UK are now open and the deadline for preliminary applications is 30th May 2008.
