Oxford: Secure data-sharing technology

Commercialisation opportunity

With organisations in all sectors capturing growing volumes of data, researchers at the University of Oxford, UK, have developed a software technology that, they say, allows information to be shared within and between organisations in a secure, controlled and dynamic manner.

Isis Innovation, Oxford’s technology transfer company, is now seeking partnerships to develop the technology commercially.

The Oxford invention, says Isis, is data- and database-independent, and features customisable data access policies, audit tracking of user access and a charging system for external users. Its real-time access log evolution will enhance database security, allow account management and impose usage limits on users.

The software provides data access control and will enable legal and ethical data sharing such as is required by national data protection legislations around the world – unlike the failings in the UK that led to the loss of 25 million Child Benefits recipients’ and 3 million learner driver’s personal details.
