New in-vehicle technologies that improve road safety, increase energy efficiency, and reduce traffic congestion have the potential to contribute to safer, cleaner and more efficient transport throughout Europe.

Many relevant systems are ready to be deployed, but in order to create a proper business case and ensure they comply with transport policy, various factors need to be better assessed and understood.

A new body, euroFOT (European Large-Scale Field Operational Tests on In-Vehicle Systems) has been set up to identify and coordinate in-the-field testing of new Intelligent Vehicle Systems. euroFOT will have the capabilities to assess how effective these systems will be on actual roads, while determining how they can contribute to transport management objectives. The field testing will also offer an early publicity of the technologies, and enable analysis of the user acceptance and market potential.

The euroFOT project is supported by the European Commission 7th Framework Programme of Information Society Technologies.
