The UK’s Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has announced two new competitions to recognise the UK’s top bioscience innovators – those committed to turning their research into products, services or advice that make a difference to people’s lives.

The £10,000 Innovator of the Year Award will be awarded annually to an individual or research team that has demonstrated how it has seized opportunities to exploit the economic and social potential of their work.

The Excellence with Impact Award will recognise bioscience departments that are building a culture that recognises the importance of generating wider impact from their research. Top prizes worth £300,000 in total will be awarded every two years.

The closing date for completed entries for the Innovator of the Year Award is 17 December 2008; the first award will be made in March 2009. Expressions of interests from departments wanting to take part in the Excellence with Impact Award should be received by 17 December 2008. The first of these awards will be made in 2011.
