Professor Malcolm Grant, President and Provost of University College London (UCL), is to act as a Business Ambassador for the UK government. The network of university and business leaders, named by Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, collaborates with the government to promote UK trade and investment opportunities at the international level.

Grant’s appointment as government Business Ambassador will emphasise how essential to international trade is the contribution of top UK research institutions, such as UCL, where 59 departments scored the highest rankings in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise.

Commenting on his nomination, Grant said: “This is a welcome recognition by the Prime Minister of the enormous contribution of UK universities to international trade, in terms both of world-leading research and rigorous education. The role gives rise to a significant responsibility but also creates a great opportunity to promote the qualities of UK higher education in a global market.”

UCL has sustained high standards of research and education since its establishment in 1826, and has been ranked tenth in the 2007 THES-QS World University Rankings and third in the 2008 league table of the top 500 world universities produced by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
