The first concrete result of work launched by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 2005 to develop standards for nanotechnologies has arrived with the publication of Nanotechnologies – Terminology and definitions for nano-objects – Nanoparticle, nanofibre and nanoplate, (ISO/TS 27687:2008). The document provides terms and definitions related to particles in the field of nanotechnologies and is intended to facilitate communications between organisations and individuals in the industry.

This, the first in a series on terminology and definitions, covers the definition of nanoparticles, nanofibres and nanoplates.

Peter Hatto, Chair of ISO Nanotechnologies committee said, “International standardisation will play a critical role in ensuring that the full potential of nanotechnology is realized and that nanotechnology is safely integrated into society.”

Standards will help create a smooth transition from the laboratory to the marketplace, promote progress along the nanotechnology value chain and facilitate global trade.

“[This document] helps to provide clarity in the description and naming of these fundamental building blocks for this important area of technology,” said Hatto.
