France’s public research body, CNRS, has agreed the formation of two International Associated Laboratories with China, the Matériaux Organophosphorés Fonctionnels Laboratoire and the French–Chinese Catalysis Laboratory.

CNRS, the Université de Rennes 1 and Zhengzhou University, Henan province, China have jointly created the International Associated Laboratory de Matériaux organophosphorés fonctionnels. This brings together the Chemical Sciences Laboratory at Rennes with the Chinese International Phosphorus Laboratory, which is headed by CNRS researcher, François Mathey.

The objective is to synthesise new phosphorus compounds for future development in plastic electronics, including flat screens and cellphones. The two teams have complementary know-how in this field. François Mathey’s team in Zhengzhou has experience in the synthesis, analysis and reactivity of complex phosphorus derivatives, while Régis Réau's team in Rennes has expertise in the synthesis and physico-chemical study of polymers and metal compounds incorporating phosphorus units.

The collaboration will enable the laboratory to move into a leading position internationally in this rapidly evolving research field.

The French Chinese Catalysis Laboratory brings together CNRS, the Université Claude Bernard in Lyon, the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics in Shanghai and a Chinese industrial partner, the Research Institute of Petroleum Processing (RIPP). The laboratory will involve three main partners, the State Key Laboratory of Catalysis in Dalian, the RIPP laboratory in Beijing and the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse et L'environnement de Lyon to carry out catalysis research energy and water treatment applications.
