A new co-operation agreement has been sealed for the Chalmers University of Technology gasifier with boiler manufacturer Metso Power. The agreement, which also includes Göteborg Energi and Akademiska Hus, brings further funding of SEK 10 million (€928,000) and marks the start of commercialisation of the gasification technology that is currently being demonstrated at Chalmers.

The facility is on an industrial scale, demonstrating technology that has the potential to produce more than 10 TWh of biogas each year for existing Swedish district heating systems. This is equivalent to 10 per cent of the fuel required to meet Sweden’s transport needs. Through the agreement Metso Power, one of the leading manufacturers of boilers and gasification equipment for biomass, will give the project a business orientation.

Apart from Chalmers the collaboration includes Göteborg Energi, which funded the construction of the gasification facility at a cost of over SEK 13 million (€1.2 million), Akademiska Hus, which is responsible for operation of the facility, and the Swedish Energy Agency.
