ETH launches climate change blog

18 Nov 2009 | Network Updates

Almost every day there are new scientific findings on climate change. Now scientists at ETH are turning to blogging to ensure that this knowledge finds its way to the public.

The notion of an officially-sanctioned science blog is a novelty in Switzerland and part of the aim of the scientists is to demonstrate that complex scientific material is suitable for a blog aimed at the general public.

ETH President Ralph Eichler has stepped into the world of blogging, following a meeting on climate change last week, organised by ETH Zurich, and bringing together representatives from academia, business and politics. “ETH Zurich is ideally suited to play the role of honest broker in tackling climate change,” Eichler says in the blog.

Twenty ETH scientists and researchers will act as authors of the climate blog, commenting on current developments. Contributors include professors Ulrike Lohmann and Nina Buchmann, while climate physicist Reto Knutti summarises the recent progress in research and highlights the contribution of Switzerland to the climate debate.

During the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference ETH students will be blogging directly from Copenhagen.

Scientific facts on climate change and other background information that can be used in schools can be found on the blog.

The ETH Zurich does not only want to lead the debate from an academic perspective, and has invited, representatives from politics, economy, culture and society to have their say. More than a dozen invited guest bloggers have expressed their views on climate issues.
