Scientists at the Friedrich Miescher Institute for Biomedical Research have developed a novel intra-mitochondrial dye.

Cells transfected with the molecule express a fluorescent dye in their mitochondria, which makes it possible to monitor, in real-time and over an extremely broad dynamic range, the calcium concentration in any particular mitochondrion of a transfected cell.

This tool is relevant to diagnostics, toxicological screening and research on mitochondria, and is available for license.
