SurgicEye GmbH has closed a first round funding enabling it to advance the development of its combined imaging and navigation system for tumour surgery. The value of the investment from Bayern Kapital, was not disclosed.

In the past 12 months the company, which is a spin-out from Technische Universität München, has turned its concept for using functional imaging in real time to support surgeons in the surgical removal of tumours into a CE labelled device.

The seed money to support this work came from two public funds, High-Tech Gründerfonds and Seedfonds Technologie Bayerns, a fund managed by Bayern Kapital.

The SurgicEye system is currently in use in two reference centres at Klinikum rechts der Isar in Munich and in Bologna, Italy, for the guided treatment breast cancer and melanoma. The company says SurgicEye enables operations both minimally invasive and remove all cancerous tissue, resulting in procedures that are more sensitive, more reliable and less invasive.
