TU Delft

TU Delft is the oldest and largest public technical university in the Netherlands, acclaimed for its world-leading research and teaching in many fields of engineering and technology.

The roots of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) stretch back to 1842, when King William II established a royal academy with the primary purpose of training civil servants for work in the Dutch East Indies. The school expanded its research and education curriculum over time, becoming a polytechnic school in 1864 and an institute of technology (with full university status) in 1905, and ultimately changing its name to Delft University of Technology in 1986.

Over the past century, TU Delft – through its eight faculties and multiple research institutes – has firmly established itself as an international leader in various scientific domains, and is currently ranked in the top 5 universities worldwide for its accomplishments in civil and structural engineering, architecture and mechanical engineering.

With around 30,000 students and doctoral candidates, the university provides a unique training environment for future generations of highly qualified, creative and innovative engineers, capable of resolving the complex societal challenges of our age. Drawing on its areas of research excellence, plus various alliances with non-technical partners, TU Delft is at the forefront of efforts to tackle systemic issues linked to resilient cities and mobility, climate and energy, health, and the transition to a digital society.

Against this backdrop, the university has recently adopted a new strategic agenda through to 2030, with the ambition of increasing its “impact for a sustainable society”. Structured around four overarching priorities – expanding scope, increasing quality, broadening engagement, and strengthening resilience – the agenda is aimed at realising TU Delft’s vision and mission, while ensuring that the university’s knowledge and innovation ecosystem continues to thrive in an unpredictable, dynamic context.
