European Molecular Biology Laboratory
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is a world-leading research institution and Europe’s flagship for the life sciences. With 29 member states, EMBL operates as an intergovernmental organisation, consisting of more than 110 independent research groups and service teams covering a wide spectrum of molecular biology.
Since its establishment in 1974, EMBL has been at the forefront of advancing molecular biology through cutting-edge research, nurturing young talent, and pioneering new ideas and technologies. Its six sites—located in Germany, France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy—conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research addressing critical challenges in human health, biodiversity, and planetary sustainability.
For nearly five decades, EMBL has led the life sciences with a strong commitment to fostering scientific excellence and innovation. Numerous scientific breakthroughs have emerged from EMBL’s research, including Nobel Prize-winning discoveries. Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard and Eric Wieschaus were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1995 for their work on embryonic development, while Jacques Dubochet earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2017 for his contributions to cryo-electron microscopy, a technique revolutionising the structural analysis of biomolecules.
EMBL also plays a vital role in training the next generation of scientists, developing state-of-the-art technologies, and providing world-class infrastructure and data services to the global scientific community. The institute is also deeply involved in expanding research in areas like structural biology, bioinformatics, and artificial intelligence, contributing to Europe’s leadership in these fields.
