The 2014 Areas of Advance prize goes to Andreas Hellström, senior lecturer and director of the Centre for Healthcare Improvement (CHI), a research and education centre that has had great impact on improvements in health care and is contributing to a sustainable society. The SEK 100,000 prize will support the work being carried out by CHI and Chalmers to further develop Swedish health care services.

Five Imperial chemists have been awarded Royal Society of Chemistry Prizes in recognition of the advancements they have made in chemical sciences.

An interdisciplinary team of scientists from KU Leuven in Belgium has developed a new technique to examine how proteins interact with each other at the level of a single HIV viral particle. The technique allows scientists to study the life-threatening virus in detail and makes screening potential anti-HIV drugs quicker and more efficient. The technique can also be used to study other diseases.
