Data protection and security: How will new technologies change the policy debate?

Should politicians be focusing at least as much on the Internet technology that is coming as they do today on the technology already here?

Protecting privacy and securing computer systems are among the most difficult policy issues on the Internet today. The policy debate so far has focused mainly on today’s risks and threats. Could new technologies, now in the lab, make a difference in this debate? Should politicians be focusing at least as much on the Internet technology that is coming as they do today on the technology already here?

A roundtable discussion with the key policy-makers responsible for this initiative:

Zoran Stančič - Deputy Director General, DG Information Society & Media, European Commission
Mario Campolargo - Director Emerging Technologies and Infrastructures, DG Information Society and Media, European Commission
Megan Richards - Director for Converged Networks & Services, DG Information Society and Media, European Commission
Cornelia Kutterer - Director of Regulatory Policy, Corporate Affairs, LCA, Microsoft EMEA
