We map out the success rates for European Research Council applicants from each country

Even with a great idea, winning a European Research Council (ERC) grant is hard work. With a 14% overall success rate, the odds are stacked against you, and researchers in some countries fare much better than others, with success rates varying from as high as 24% to as low as zero.
The most successful country in ERC competitions is Israel, with researchers based there securing a grant with almost every fourth application under Horizon Europe.
Israel’s 23.6% success rate is far ahead of the two runners-up, the Netherlands and Germany. Proposals from these two countries have an almost 18% chance of securing ERC funding.
Other countries with above average success rates are Austria, France and the UK, all exceeding 16%.
