To do well in the European Innovation Council’s (EIC) tough competition for start-up funding, EU member states should first invest in fostering their local start-up ecosystems, according to Emmanuele Angione, managing partner at Dublin-based innovation consultancy, Lira.

Angione’s bread and butter is the EIC Accelerator programme for start-ups. In the EIC bubble, he’s known as the ‘data guy’ thanks to his detailed reports on where, how and who secures financing from the EU’s €10 billion innovation fund.

He says the key to securing EIC funding is maturity. While the EIC Accelerator is open to all start-ups, those that perform best in the €7 billion scheme operate in a centre of excellence and have already benefitted from national-level support at earlier stages and are ready for the market. <…
