DG Sante published an analysis of 133 responses it received to a public consultation on the third health programme 2014-2020, which ran from November 2016 – February 2017. The consultation, which was part of the mid-term review of the programme, was intended to ensure that, in addition to stakeholders that benefit directly, a wide range of European organisations involved in healthcare can be involved in shaping the programme. The results of public consultation will be taken into account when setting priorities and introducing improvements for the future.
The third health programme is jointly funded by member states with the aim of improving the health of EU citizens by reducing health inequalities, encouraging innovation in health, increasing the sustainability of health systems and improving cooperation in healthcare between member states.
The total budget for the 7-year programme is €449.4 million. Each member state benefiting from the fund is obliged to report on how it spent the money to the European Parliament and Council in an annual and a mid-term review.
The consultation found that half of respondents considered the funding mechanisms are appropriate, while around one in three thought the level of financial support the programme offers is not enough to address its objectives.
