Aviation moonshot will bring together Horizon Europe and other funding instruments, likely including an expanded public-private partnership

The EU’s Clean Aviation joint undertaking (JU) is hoping that its successor public-private partnership will have a central role in steering funding under Horizon Europe and the European Competitiveness Fund (ECF), as part of a future “moonshot” initiative for the sector.
Smart and clean aviation is listed as one of 11 possible moonshot projects, designed to position Europe as a global leader in strategic fields, in the European Commission’s proposal for the next Horizon Europe programme, due to start in 2028.
Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the commissioner responsible for sustainable transport, confirmed that a moonshot for the sector is in the works during the Clean Aviation Annual Forum on March 17. The aim is to create a “seamless investment journey from research to deployment,” he said.
