New €3.3B funding period may bring changes to the European Economic Area-funded cohesion scheme and grants awarded for research
A new €3.268 billion funding period for the European Economic Area (EEA) and Norway Grants is in the making. Here’s how it all works – and what researchers might expect.
The EEA and Norway award ‘cohesion’ grants to 15 EU member states, which all get to set their own priorities for the grants within six broad domains and under the three priorities of the green transition, democracy, and social inclusion and resilience.
Under the broad definition of cohesion, research is one of the areas that gets funding. In the last round, 265 research projects were awarded €229 million.
These grants are financed by Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, the three countries that are part of the EEA, but not in the EU. It’s their way to contribute to Europe’s cohesion policy, in accordance with the rules of the EEA agreement. Alongside research, the money goes to areas…
