EIT to keep funding regional and education activities

Funding for core activities will go on, even though knowledge and innovation communities are meant to become financially independent in 2025

The European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) will continue cooperating with its first three knowledge and innovation communities (KICs) on a number of activities after they are due to become financially autonomous in 2025.

The news will come as a relief to many who were concerned that regional innovation hubs and education activities, which are highly valued by stakeholders but not particularly profitable, could be cut once the KICs lose their predefined funding.

EIT Climate-KIC, EIT Digital and EIT InnoEnergy, the first of nine KICs, were created in 2010. That means their 15-year partnership agreements with EIT expire in 2025 and they  are required to be financially independent of EIT.
