Health and agriculture are the top cooperation areas, as the EU promises to spend €1.7 billion on Horizon Europe’s Africa Initiative

Over the past few years, the EU has been actively increasing its investment in research and innovation projects involving African countries. We break down how much has been invested so far.
Overall, the EU’s Horizon Europe research programme has awarded €473 million in funding to researchers in African institutions participating in 529 projects. That’s a total of 1,501 participations in EU research projects for 715 participants from 43 countries. It’s a small percentage of the overall EU programme, but an important policy priority for the bloc.
African institutions have been most active in Horizon Europe’s Pillar 2 for collaborative projects, with more than 1,100 projects, but have also taken part in 292 fundamental science projects under Pillar 1.
