UK Research and Innovation will run idea workshops and fund 12-month projects on usable novel scientometric indicators

UK Research and Innovation is seeking research projects that develop and validate novel ways of measuring scientific output. The resulting scientometric indicators would be for use in research assessment exercises and metascience research.
The £3 million fund’s goal is to deliver actionable research findings, such as new open access measures and indicators ready to be used by research funders and policymakers.
The rationale? AI and the increasing availability of data could deliver a paradigm shift in how research is assessed, going beyond traditional citation-based metrics. Many new indicators for assessing novelty, interdisciplinarity and quality, among other aspects of science, have already been proposed, but they still lack validation and theoretical reflection involving the research community. The programme will try to tackle the remaining roadblocks.
