More recognition of Alzheimer’s disease and more research funding is needed, says the European Parliament.

The European Parliament has backed a call for concerted action in medical research, early diagnosis and prevention of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative diseases, following publication of a report, The European initiative on Alzheimer´s disease and other dementias.

The report says there should be more recognition of the disease and its wide implications for families, carers and society at large, highlighting the need to better ensure quality of life, through early and accurate diagnosis.

“The fight against Alzheimer’s disease has finally been recognised as a priority in recent years. This form of cerebral ageing affects over seven million Europeans. There are currently over 10 million people living with all types of neurodegenerative diseases,” said Frédérique Ries and Belgian MEP.

“We welcome the existing European funding, but we have to concentrate on better coordination of medical research, early diagnosis, focus on prevention and ensure sufficient funding.”
