FAO and the Politecnico di Milano are strengthening their collaboration in the field of digital technologies applied to agriculture. The two institutions have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on the development and application of Geospatial Information Technologies (Geospatial IT) and Geospatial Artificial Intelligence (GeoAI), with the goal of supporting the sustainable transformation of agri-food systems and contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda.
The agreement combines FAO’s global mandate with the scientific expertise of the Politecnico di Milano to strengthen agricultural planning, territorial monitoring and decision-making processes, with a focus on food security, natural resource management and climate resilience.
Through its Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the Politecnico di Milano will contribute advanced expertise in geographic information science and territorial systems applied to agriculture, environmental sustainability and rural development.
The Memorandum also establishes a framework for collaboration on capacity building activities and the development of technical skills in geospatial systems to support participating countries. Joint awareness and outreach initiatives on the role of geospatial technologies in building more sustainable agri-food systems are also planned.
The collaboration will be implemented through a jointly updated work plan aimed at developing high-impact solutions to support food security, climate resilience and more inclusive rural development.
