The Research Council of Finland has selected the Finnish Quantum Flagship to its flagship programme. CSC is a partner in this flagship initiative, coordinated by Aalto University.

CSC is strongly involved in building a national and international quantum computing ecosystem, where quantum computer and supercomputer operate side by side, complementing each other.

"The Finnish Quantum Flagship will provide the long-term vision to bring quantum technology to end-users. For example, combining quantum computing with traditional high-performance computing still requires a lot of development work, but it will eventually revolutionize the way we do computational research. Finland is already a global leader in quantum technology. We look forward to participating in a project that will further enhance Finland's quantum expertise," says Kimmo Koski, Managing Director of CSC.

In 2022, the LUMI supercomputer hosted by CSC and the Helmi quantum computer of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland were combined in cooperation between VTT, CSC and Aalto University. This was the first time in Europe that a supercomputer connected to a quantum computer became available to European researchers.

The flagship projects funded by the Research Council of Finland are of great interest to the CSC because they form ambitious and effective ecosystems of top research and RDI actors. The flagships are also well networked internationally.

The Research Council of Finland flagship programme supports high quality research and increases the economic and societal impact emerging from the research.

Finland's quantum flagship includes Aalto University, the University of Helsinki, CSC – IT Center for Science, the University of Jyväskylä, the Tampere University, the University of Oulu and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. The flagship is led by Professor Peter Liljeroth from Aalto University.
