With the European Parliament confirming Commission president Ursula Von der Leyen’s team last week, the former prime minister of Lithuania Andrius Kubilius officially began a five-year term as the new EU Commissioner for Defence and Space on December 1.
During his confirmation hearing, Kubilius stressed the importance of Europe joining the "space revolution," and the need to advance EU space programmes, secure autonomous access to space, introduce a new EU space law, and enhance the competitiveness of the EU space industry through increased investment and other interventions.
This will build on the EU’s significant involvement in space research through the framework programmes, the European Defence Fund, and its partnership with the European Space Agency
